Back in the beginning of his career as a luthier, George Lowden attempted to make an electric guitar. He had little background in electric guitars, and after the first attempt, left behind the world of solid body electrics. Now, after decades of producing some of the finest acoustic guitars in the world, he has once again decided to delve into the realm of electrics guitars. The difference is this time he is bringing 40 years of experience in the art of building the guitars. The result, the absolutely stunning Lowden GL-10.
George’s decision to create the GL-10 when an artist came to him in 2016 and wanted an electric guitar for his friend’s birthday. George went away a little bit to think about the request, and came back with something special. When the artist played the guitar meant for his friend, he immediately told George he wanted one. That artist’s name: Ed Sheeran. Since then, Sheeran has regularly appeared playing a Wee Lowden!
So now Lowden Guitars is unveiling a full line of GL-10s, which they brought to NAMM 2018, and the Heartbreaker crew all got to give them a test run. The balance and responsiveness of this guitar is amazing, it practically plays itself. The tone is absolutely delicious, with an amazing, full sound that naturally and effortlessly sustains. The aesthetic is classic Lowden, and breathtakingly elegant.
The GL-10 features a Mahogany body with three choices of top wood: Koa, Walnut, and Mahogany. The middle laminate piece comes in two flavors, Rosewood or Maple. It is all finished with a hand-rubbed oil finish.
The neck is the signature Lowden 5-piece Mahogany with Rosewood staples. The head facings are Ancient Bog Oak. The scale length is 630mm (24.8in”) with a finger radius of 12in. The fingerboard has 22 frets with a rosewood fretboard. The nut width is 43mm (1.69in) with a string width of 53mm (2.09in) at the fourteenth.
The GL-10 features 2 Lollar Imperial Humbuckers, with a 3 way pickup selector, 2 volume, and 1 tone knob.
The bridge is a Gotoh GE103B-T, and Gotoh 510 gold tuning machines with ebony buttons. The volume and control knobs are gold knurled knobs.
The GL-10 is available with a maple neck, mother-of-pearl fret board dot markers, or left handed.
