Hello everyone, welcome to another edition of the Heartbreaker Guitars Blog, today we are going to focus on another killer guitar from the Paul Reed Smith Family, the PRS S2 Singlecut Standard Satin. First and Foremost for those that might not know, the S2 line is made in the USA at the Factory in Stevensville, Maryland by the same luthiers producing the Custom, Signature and Private stock guitars. Paul Reed Smith began producing the S2 line in 2013 to provide players an affordable, working class guitar that still has the tone and quality the PRS Guitars are known for. We definitely agree that they nailed both of these aspects in the S2 Guitars.
The Paul Reed Smith S2 line is made up of their most popular models such as the Custom 22 and 24, the Singlecut, and some variations on these classic PRS models with the Mira, Vela, and Starla. There are many aspects of this guitar that makes the Paul Reed Smith S2 Singlecut Standard Satin worthy of a deeper look. The first thing you will notice on the guitar is the smooth nitro satin finish covering the all mahogany body and neck. There is no grain filler used on this guitar so it has a distinctive look and the satin finish is very thin. The finishing of guitars is a very labor intensive process so the satin finish on the PRS S2 Singlecut Satin really helps keep the cost down while not sacrificing any tone. It is a refreshing change to see a guitar in a raw, natural state that allows the open pores of the wood grain to really sing and breathe. This really gives this guitar a classic vibe with a warm tone that an all mahogany guitar provides especially with these #7 humbuckers that belt out punchy tones that can cover everything from hard rock to blues and anything else you can throw at it.
The beveled edges of the body and the contours make this guitar very comfortable if you are sitting on the couch or rocking the local club. This guitar is made even more capable due to the push pull tone coil tapping options allowing access to snappy and meaty single coil tones.
The PRS S2 Singlecut Standard Satin is equipped with PRS Low Mass Locking tuners and the PRS Adjustable Stoptail bridge which really allows for great set up and intonation, much better than a standard wrap around tail piece. These two pieces of this beautiful guitar ensure the S2 stays in tune no matter what you throw at it. The PRS S2 Singlecut control layout will be very familiar to anyone playing the other famous singlecut that started it all but with the added versatility of the coil splitting.
Here at Heartbreak Guitars, an authorized Paul Reed Smith Dealer, we are amazed at how comfortable this guitar feels right out of the gate. Like some guitar that has been setting in your parent’s closet for 20 years, you pick it up and plays amazing. We think one of the biggest factors for this is the satin finish on the neck. It makes playing these guitars a dream, you don’t ever want to put it down. Don’t just take are word for it, check out these kind words from the reviewer at Guitar World.
The PRS S2 Series guitars are testimony to the power of simplicity, and the Singlecut Standard Satin really drives this point home with its bold, powerful tone that originates with its lively, responsive natural acoustic resonance. When plugged in that tone just gets bigger and better. The bridge pickup produces an aggressive snarl that loves overdrive and distortion, and the neck pickup provides a throaty, sonorous wail. The coil taps produce true single-coil tones and textures (not wimped-down humbucker tones) that sound big and meaty while also delivering gnarly twang. While the body is quite impressively thick, the contours make the guitar very comfortable to play for extended periods. And when the neck feels as sleek and luxurious as the PRS Pattern Regular profile, trust me, you won’t be putting this baby down for a while.
So here we have just one amazing USA made guitar from the Paul Reed Smith S2 line, for more info on the other S2 models please check out the Paul Reed Smith website. Please click here to check out what killer PRS guitars are available at Heartbreaker Guitars. Thank you and happy picking!
