Taylor Tuesday: Taylor 514ce

Brendan Smyth
Hello friends and welcome back to Heartbreaker Guitars Taylor Tuesday! This week we are Falling in Love with an incredible bargain of a guitar! The incredible and popular Taylor 514ce Grand Auditorium guitar. A favorite among singer/songwriters, fingerstyle guitar players, and light strummers, this guitar is a great deal and gives you a great bang for your buck!

The Tone

The Taylor 514ce is has a beautiful Western Red Cedar top, with Mahogany back and sides. The Cedar gives it incredible volume and power, as well as a great response and clarity. The Mahogany gives the tone a slightly brighter tone, without muddying up the sound to much. This makes the guitar respond to the light delicate finger-picking, but allows it to also handle strumming with out sounding to busy or muddy. The Taylor 514ce has really strong clear mids, but also really subtle, slight overtones. The Cedar top adds a lot of warmth that makes the guitar sound mature and played in from the outset. The Body

The Grand Auditorium style body has a Venetian cutaway for ease of access to the upper frets. The soundbox is a comfortable 4 5/8" with a length of 20" and a width of 16". This makes for a guitar that is small enough to feel comfortable while you hold it and play it, yet in conjunction with the cedar top makes this a powerful guitar plenty of projection and resonance.

The Neck

The Taylor 514ce has a gorgeous tropical mahogany neck. The fingerboard is ebony, and bound with tortoise. The headstock has a ebony overlay, and the inlay on the fingerboard is Taylor's century pattern. The specs of the neck are:
  • Scale Length: 25 1/2"
  • String Spacing at Bridge: 2 1/5"
  • Nut Width: 1 3/4"
  • Truss Rod: Two way adjustable

Electronics

This guitar boasts the renowned Taylor Expression 2 system. This allows for the entire character of the guitars tone to be picked up and amplified for live performances.
