Rick Turner passed away in April of 2022. We lost a friend, partner, and mentor. Many people dont know, but Rick was not only a Master Guitar Builder, but he was also a personable and funny guy. He used to have an irreverent attitude about the lofty “Master Builder” designation. He cared about the guitar player. He cared about making tools for working musicians. He loved to discuss gear, tone, and just music in general. Having been building guitars since his 20’s he had a litany of clients - everyone from Jackson Browne to John Mayer, to his most notable celebrity/musician client: Lindsey Buckingham of 70’s powerhouse, Fleetwood Mac. It’s been almost 3 years since Rick passed on and the crew at Turner Guitars in Santa Cruz, California march forward with intent on continuing his legacy of artisan craftsmanship.
The Legacy series was born of the employees of Turner Guitars. Since 2022, they had been discussing building a Model 1 that would serve as a tribute to Rick. Lots of ideas were thrown around, but what they landed on was just perfect. Rick had always cut a lot of the woods at Turner Guitars himself personally. They had a bunch of Spanish Cedar bodies that Rick cut and set aside back in 2021-2022. So they decided to use these bodies for the Legacy Series. Since it was the much lighter Cedar body, they would be designated “Featherweights”. The Cedar bodies would be “capped” with Quilted Maple along with a slew of other upgrades: Pau Abalone purfling dons the body, fretboard and the peghead. Quilted Maple over the headstock is also bordered by Abalone. A vintage Turner logo also on the headstock. The neck is an upgraded 5 layer laminated Purpleheart and Mahogany. The headstock backstrap is Quilted Maple. Gotoh Tuners. The truss rod cover, pick up surround, tail piece and the circular elecronics cover on the back are all Tortoise Acrylic. The Legacy has a full electronics package including the Rick Turner “Hot Humbucker”, Parametric EQ with a boost/cut function. The Piezo pick up has blending electronics so the Humbucker can be mixed with the Piezo. Full Tortoise binding. The final touch is the old Turner Lionshead logo. Hard shell case is included. The weight on these guitars will vary, but will come in between 6.5-7.5 pounds. They are referred to as Featherweights because the core body is made of Spanish Cedar instead of Mahogany. The Mahogany Model 1’s usually weigh around 8.0-8.5 pounds. The FW’s have a slightly more acoustic flavor to them. Although every bit capable of that signature Rick Turner tone, the Cedar body provides slightly more resonance and mid range tones. Most of it can be noticed on “clean settings”. If you turn the Piezo on 100% and play through a solid state, acoustic amp, you’ll swear you’re listening to an acoustic guitar! Plug in the Hot Humbucker to a Marshall and let the Rock n Roll begin!! An incredibly versatile instrument, capable of of everything from Rock to Country to Metal! It does it all!
This is an heirloom guitar and once they are completed there will be no more. These guitars were made with a lot of love by the very capable crew at Turner Guitars.
The Legacy series will only be a limited edition. Call Heartbreaker Guitars for all details.
